SASSA Reapplication for R350 in 2024

Have you recently stopped receiving your Social Relief of Distress grant from Sassa and are now considering a reapplication? It’s crucial to continually keep yourself updated and follow the specified instructions on the Sassa SRD website to apply for the recurring Sassa R350 grant.

A Brief History of Sassa’s SRD Grant

The SRD grant was established in May 2020 as a contingent steps to accommodate the needs of those most impacted by the lockdown constraints. The grant was extended several times, prompting discussion about its future. It requires tough funding decisions and compromises.

However, with a significant decrease in approvals from the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA), millions lost access to the grant after April last year. Minister of Finance Godongwana made this revelation during a statement on medium-term fiscal policy to parliament.

Drops and Highs in Recipients, Inquiries, and Approvals

Between March and April 2023, SASSA reported a drop in SRD grant recipients from 10.9 million to under 4.8 million. Concurrently, inquiries fell from 15.8 million in March to 8.1 million in April. While applications and approvals have risen since March, they remain well below the 10.5 million limit set by the Department of Social Development (DSD).

In August, the number of applications was slightly over 12 million, with approvals standing at 7.4 million, according to SASSA’s response to a congressional inquiry.
