Understanding SAFCOL

Known formally as South African Forestry Company Limited, SAFCOL is a state-owned enterprise functioning under the oversight of the Department of Public Enterprises. The company is involved in various forestry-related activities such as timber processing and harvesting, both at a local and international level. Having a substantial presence in various South African regions, including KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, and Mpumalanga, SAFCOL aims to enhance the value of their business chain.

The company recognizes the need for sustainability and places a significant priority on business practices that are economically viable, environmentally friendly, and socially beneficial.

About the Learnership

The SAFCOL Silviculture Learnership focuses on forestry skills development for unemployed individuals. Conducted at Platorand, the official SAFCOL training center based in Sabie in Mpumalanga Province, the learnership offers a monthly stipend to participants for financial support throughout the program’s duration.

Emphasizing inclusivity, the program gives priority to previously disadvantaged individuals, people living with disabilities, black females, and youth from communities that have signed Social Compacts with SAFCOL.

Participants of the learnership undertake a one-year structured program that includes both theoretical and practical training aspects, leading to a nationally recognized qualification at the end: the General Education and Training Certificate in Silviculture at NQF level 3. This prepares learners not only for potential employment in forestry companies and contractors but also to establish their Small, Medium, and Micro-sized Enterprises in the forestry sector.
