Job Description

The South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) is looking for highly motivated scientists to conduct systematics research on the South African flora in accordance with the SANBI Research Strategy.
This position requires a Master’s degree in Botany or equivalent qualification with NQF 9. A postgraduate qualification in Botany or equivalent qualification at NQF 10 will be an added advantage. This position also requires 2 years’ experience in relevant field.
The following competencies are required for the candidate to be successful in this position: the candidate must have proven and/or evidence of relevant research experience in botanical systematics e.g. publication of a full first-authored paper in a recognized journal on botanical systematics or proven progress on a thesis (project in plant systematics approved with the university and chapters drafted; proven experience of scientific research ability (e.g. at least one relevant, full length first-authored paper in a peer-reviewed journal and/or progress on postgraduate thesis); comprehensive knowledge of procedures related to curation of herbarium collections and provision of specialist information services (e.g. species-level identifications); advanced planning, organizing, interpersonal, and problem solving skills; excellent communication skills (both verbal and written); and computer literacy and experience in the application of software tools (including MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet and Outlook). An understanding of taxonomic nomenclature and the possession of a valid driver’s license with at least one-year practical driving experience and a willingness to travel will be advantageous.

Key Performance Responsibilities include:

Design and carry out taxonomic research projects in line with SANBI’s strategy and priorities, and apply for external funding;
Publish/disseminate results of research and scientific compilation;
Conduct scientific curation of herbarium specimens; and
Conduct plant identifications and answering enquiries related to specialist plant families.
Salary commensurate with a range of inputs and outputs in terms of the SANBI career ladder for scientists.
