Job Description

Tygerburger, proud source of news and information in the Northern suburbs, offers an exciting opportunity in their Bellville office for a general and hard news reporter, who also has a keen interest in digital. The successful candidate must be able to work independently; have excellent writing skills in Afrikaans and English; must write relevant, commanding and factually correct news reports and articles for the weekly publication Tygerburger and must be able to process reports up to the level of publication readiness. Main responsibilities: • Independently conduct research and research for news reports and articles with a particular focus on general and sports news • Write quality news reports and articles on strict deadlines • Create articles for our target audience • Develop ideas for articles • Adhere to the content standards, quality and style as set out by the publication • Comply with the requirements of the South African Press Code • Create and connect with a network of contacts for help with research for news reports / articles • Can be asked to assist with production related tasks, take photos and create content for online and other media Skills required: • Fluent writing in the languages required by the publication (Afrikaans and English) • Creativity • Work under extreme pressure and adhere to strict deadlines • Good time management and the ability to pay attention to various happenings • Good sense of what is news • Focus on details and quality • Good human relations • Good decision-making skills • Perseverance • Listening and questioning abilities • Can work independently • Initiative Requirements: • Diploma or degree in Journalism, Languages or Media Studies • Experience in writing for a newspaper or magazine, preferably experience in a news office • Good general knowledge and understanding of the publication’s target market • Local knowledge and knowledge of current affairs • Valid driver’s license • Relevant computer skills • A passion for media.The successful candidate must reside in Cape Town area or be willing to move if appointed.Subbing experience will be an advantage. Given the employment equity policy of Media24, preference will be given to suitable candidates from the designated groups.
