I&J is proudly South African and invests in, and empowers, the communities in which it operates.An exciting opportunity has arisen for a 1st Mate responsible for the safety, navigation, cleanliness and operation of a trawler and the total complement on board and who directs fishing operations of the vessel.MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:EXPERIENCE:3 Years experience sailing as a 1st MateQUALIFICATIONS:Officer in charge of Navigational Watch – under 24m/ Fisherman Grade 3COURSES COMPLETED: Annual MedicalShip Captains MedicalAdvance Fire FightingGMDSS – Radio CertificationPSSRCISCDSDMarine Fire FightingMarine First AidCommunicationsLeadership & ManagementConflict Management TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES & KNOWLEDGE:Fishing Rights (FRAPP)Vessel ManagementSAMSAMS OfficeExcellent Communication skills (Verbal & Written)Health & Safety on vessels COMPETENCIES: Continuously ImprovingArticulating InformationMaking DecisionsInspiring OthersBeing self confidentUnderstanding OthersPlanning & OrganisingPersisting JOB SPECIFICATION:KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS: Watch Keeping DutiesCustodian of Navigational Equipment on the vesselUse of appropriate trawl nets for the specific targeted speciesProper net and gear management for protection and prevention of gear lossSafety Officer on boardEnsure proper fillet conversion on the freezer vessels in line with targets.Achieve tons per sea day as per business plan.Ensure good quality products are caught, processed and Manage Waste and costs.Manage fishing time to achieve 75% scoring on tons per day (Sea Day)Apply the safety & health precautions and procedures for fishing vessel personnelConduct vessel audits and inspections before sailing and after docking including recording drill meetings with crew members.Ensure that all safety codes are up to date and amended appropriately.Vessel hygiene and housekeeping of vesselEnsure that all certificates of competencies are valid (checked and signed off before sailing)Guide and support staff to achieve vessel performance targets.Take appropriate correction when required.Identify training requirements.Assist with the management of the vessel “Care” program which includes, housekeeping QC, Engineering QC, equipment damage and failure with RCA reporting and converting corrective maintenance into progressive and plannedEngineeringVessel availabilityFactory AvailabilityAsset Care StrategyContractor SLA Compliance
