Traffic Officer (2 Posts)

Key Requirements:
- A Grade 12 Certificate
- A Traffic Officers Diploma
- Registration as a Traffic Officer with the Department of Transport
- A Code B/EB driver’s licence
- A Grade B driving licence Examiner will be an added advantage
- Peace Officer Certificate/valid SAPS clearance (SAPS69i) not older than 4 months
- Minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience
- Ability to communicate in both isiZulu and English
- Problem-solving skills, writing skills, computer knowledge, and knowledge of NRTA 93/96
- Be physically fit and able-bodied
- No criminal records or pending cases
Key Performance Areas:
The Traffic Officer will be responsible for a wide range of duties focused on law enforcement, traffic management, and public safety. These include:
- Enforcing laws and municipal bylaws to ensure compliance and safety on roads and public areas.
- Coordinating activities to control traffic flow and enhance public safety.
- Performing traffic control and escort duties, including point duties during peak times or events.
- Processing warrants of arrest and carrying out other traffic-related responsibilities as needed.
- Communicating with the control room to address traffic bottlenecks caused by accidents, breakdowns, or congestion, especially during festive seasons.
- Using hand signals to direct drivers and pedestrians, divert traffic, stop vehicles, and manage flow effectively.
- Interacting with the control room for specific services and patrolling areas to communicate with offenders.
- Collaborating with the South Africa Police Services (SAPS) control room to facilitate arrests for serious offenses.
- Participating in routine checks by stopping vehicles and inspecting driver’s licences, vehicle registration, and roadworthiness to enforce road safety rules.
- Issuing fines, warnings, and summons to offenders, and executing warrants of arrest.
- Performing any other functions as directed by the Chief Traffic Officer and supervisors.
- Setting up and operating speed timing devices, stopping offenders, and providing evidence such as electronic recordings before issuing fines or summons.
- Attending to documentation and notification procedures, serving summons, compliance orders, executing warrants of arrest, and preparing statements.
- Attending court sessions and providing evidence to support charges and defend actions.
- Monitoring local areas for security operations, acting on inappropriate situations or behaviors.
- Patrolling streets and suburbs to identify non-conforming practices.
- Responding to distress calls or crime-in-progress information by communicating with the control room to locate and handle situations, including crowd control and arrests.
- Communicating with offenders and coordinating with control rooms, SAPS, EMRS, or Fire services for serious offenses.
- Capturing data for all infringements into relevant systems.
- Assisting the pound master or rangers in impounding cattle on public roads.
- Completing specific reports, statutory documentation, and registers as required.
- Recording statements from witnesses and offenders or detailing traffic and other related offenses before issuing fines.
- Updating the occurrence book with details of incidents and activities, and completing procedural documentation such as vehicle log sheets, time sheets, statements, and inspection checklists.
- Adhering to legislation in terms of the Road Traffic Act 93/96 requirements.
- Using hand signals to communicate with drivers and pedestrians for directing, diverting, stopping, and controlling traffic flow.
- Performing basic examiner duties and other traffic section-related tasks when required by the supervisor.
- Carrying out any other lawful duties as instructed by superiors.

The selected candidate will be required to disclose all financial interests, sign a Contract of Employment, and enter into a Performance Agreement. They will also undergo security vetting.
