Learner’s Licence Overview
A learner’s licence is a temporary permit allowing new drivers to practise driving under controlled conditions in South Africa. Governed by the National Road Traffic Act (1996), this certificate remains valid for 24 months from issue date.
Licence Codes and Requirements
South Africa uses three licence categories for learner drivers:
Code 1
For motorcycle riders aged 16+ (max 125cc engine) or 17+ (any engine size). Requires separate passenger exemption for carrying pillion riders.
Code 2
Covers light vehicles with gross vehicle mass ≤3,500kg (cars, minibuses). Available to applicants aged 17 or older.
Code 3
For heavy vehicles exceeding 3,500kg GVM (trucks, freight vehicles). Minimum age requirement: 18 years.
General Restrictions
All learner drivers must follow these rules:
• Drive only with a licensed driver supervising in front seat
• Display L-plates visible from 30m
• Maintain blood alcohol below 0.05g/100ml
• No towing without special permission
Application Process
Applicants must book and pass a theory test at a driving licence testing centre. Study materials include road signs, vehicle controls, and traffic regulations. Bring original ID, proof of address, and an eye test certificate when applying.
Validity and Testing
The learner’s licence serves as proof of basic traffic law knowledge. Drivers must obtain this certificate before attempting the practical driving test. Successful candidates get a two-year window to complete their full driving licence application.
Note: Licence categories remain fixed – you can’t upgrade codes without reapplying. Visit your nearest driving licence centre to begin the process.
