Adult Matric Registration 2025: Complete Guide

The Department of Basic Education opens 2025 adult matric registration in August 2024 for South Africans aged 21+ who want to complete their National Senior Certificate (NSC). Registrations occur at provincial education offices and accredited centers nationwide, helping adults improve career prospects or meet further education requirements.

Who Can Register?

Adults aged 21 or older (by October 2025) without an NSC qualify. Those with incomplete matric results from previous years may combine old credits with new subjects. No upper age limit applies.

Required Documents

Bring these to registration centers: valid SA ID/book/document, original/certified school reports (if available), and proof of residential address. First-time applicants without school records complete a placement assessment.

Registration Process

Submit documents at any Department of Labour-accredited centre between 1 August and 30 September 2024. “All adult matric applications require verification through our provincial offices,” states Education Minister Angie Motshekga. Fees vary by province (R130-R400), with exemptions for social grant recipients.

Study Options

Choose part-time evening classes (2-3 times weekly) or self-study through approved online platforms like Mindset Learn. Exams occur nationwide in June and November 2025 across all nine provinces.

Rewrite Opportunities

Existing NSC holders can improve marks in up to four subjects under new 2025 rules. Applicants select two subjects per exam sitting, limited to three attempts per subject. Registration for rewrites follows the same process as new candidates.

Why Register?

An NSC certificate improves access to jobs requiring Grade 12, vocational training (TVET colleges), and certain university programmes. Over 78% of 2023 adult matriculants reported better employment outcomes within six months of completion.
