Job Description
The National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) is committed to social responsibility by offering opportunities to unemployed graduates. These programs help you gain valuable workplace skills and hands-on experience in the field of nuclear and radiation safety. As an Inspector in Training focusing on Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM), you will play a key role in ensuring the safety of people, property, and the environment from nuclear and radiation risks.
This is an entry-level position designed for recent graduates who want to build a career in regulatory work within the nuclear sector. You will receive training and support to develop your expertise while contributing to important compliance and inspection activities.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 certificate
- A completed National Qualifications Framework (NQF) Level 7 qualification in one of the following fields: Physics, Chemistry, Environmental Management, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Nuclear Engineering
- At least 1 year of experience in regulatory work or a relevant industry
- South African citizenship
Required Knowledge
To succeed in this role, you should have a basic understanding of the following areas:
- Radiation Protection
- Nuclear Safety
- Waste Safety
- Transport Safety
- Environmental Protection
Skills Development and Training Focus Areas
During your 24-month contract, you will receive focused training in key areas of regulatory work. This includes:
- Taking part in compliance assurance activities, such as planned and unplanned inspections, environmental sampling, investigations, nuclear emergency exercises, project review meetings, and radiological confirmatory surveys
- Helping to review compliance reports to ensure they meet regulatory standards
- Assisting with the analysis of results from laboratory tests and reviews
This training will give you practical experience in real-world scenarios, helping you grow your skills in inspection and regulatory compliance.
Skills and Competencies
We are looking for candidates who demonstrate the following skills and qualities:
- Proficiency in the Microsoft Office package (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
- Strong teamwork abilities
- Good communication skills, both verbal and written
- The ability to work effectively under pressure
- Solid interpersonal skills for building relationships with colleagues and stakeholders
