Position Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Machine Operator to join our Sports and Recreation branch within the Community Development Department. This important role focuses on developing, establishing, and maintaining efficient and integrated maintenance of sports fields, stadia, and recreation facilities across various regions of the City of Johannesburg.
As a Machine Operator, you will be responsible for operating specialized equipment essential to keeping our community’s sports and recreational spaces in excellent condition. Your work will directly contribute to providing safe, well-maintained facilities where residents can enjoy various sporting and recreational activities.
Primary Function
To develop, establish and maintain an efficient and integrated maintenance system for Sport and Recreation sports fields, stadia, and recreation facilities throughout the City of Johannesburg. This involves hands-on operation of machinery, routine maintenance tasks, and ensuring all equipment functions optimally to support community sporting activities.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for this position, applicants must meet the following essential criteria:
- Grade 10 qualification or NQF Level 2 equivalent is required
- Minimum of 6 to 12 months of proven experience working as a machine operator
- Demonstrated ability to operate and conduct machine maintenance on grass-cutting and line-marking machines
- Practical experience in monitoring and coordinating machine repairs
Key Performance Areas
This role encompasses several critical responsibilities that ensure the effective maintenance of sports facilities:
Equipment Operation and Maintenance
- Operate and maintain grass-cutting equipment strictly according to the manufacturer’s owner manual and operational guidelines
- Conduct daily inspections of machinery to identify potential issues before they become major problems
- Perform routine maintenance tasks such as cleaning, oiling, and sharpening blades to ensure optimal performance
- Monitor equipment performance and report any malfunctions or necessary repairs to supervisors promptly
Safety and Compliance
- Ensure the safety of community members and colleagues by strictly complying with the Occupational Health and Safety Act regulations
- Implement proactive measures to prevent injuries, accidents, and equipment damages in the workplace
- Conduct safety checks on equipment before each use and maintain safety records as required
- Wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times during operations
Field Maintenance Operations
- Perform specific tasks and activities associated with the provision of professional grass cutting services across various sports facilities
- Execute precise field line marking for sports such as soccer, rugby, athletics, and other recreational activities according to standard specifications
- Follow established schedules to ensure facilities are maintained regularly and are ready for scheduled events and community use
- Maintain high standards of workmanship to ensure playing surfaces are safe, level, and properly marked
Equipment Handling and Logistics
- Perform specific tasks and activities associated with loading, unloading, and transporting machinery and tools to different work sites
- Physically lift and move equipment as required, ensuring proper handling techniques are used to prevent damage and personal injury
- Secure equipment properly during transportation between various regions within the City of Johannesburg
- Maintain an inventory of tools and equipment, reporting any losses or damages immediately
