POST 39/87: LEGAL ADMIN OFFICER (REF NO: LAO)
Salary: R464 634 – R1 111 323 per annum (Level MR-5), in line with the Occupational Specific Dispensation (OSD).
Location: Pretoria
Requirements
To qualify for this position, you need:
- A Bachelor of Law (LLB) degree or a four-year legal qualification recognized by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
- Admission as an Attorney or Advocate by the relevant Bar Council.
- A minimum of eight years of appropriate post-qualification legal experience.
An added advantage would be:
- A postgraduate degree in Law.
- Admission as an Attorney or Advocate of the Bar Council.
You should also have:
- Training in MS Office packages.
- Knowledge of the legislative framework on litigation, drafting of contracts, legislative drafting, civil litigation, criminal procedure and practice, and court rules.
- Key competencies including communication (both verbal and written), trial advocacy, analytical thinking, policy analysis, conflict resolution, research skills, and negotiation skills.
Duties
In this role, you will be responsible for the following key tasks:
- Study and cite relevant cases related to legal opinions, providing recommendations and conclusions within legal boundaries.
- Conduct research on applicable policies, legislation, regulations, and legal principles relevant to legal opinions, and formulate questions to address in those opinions.
- Consult and prepare briefs to advise relevant authorities, seeking permission to institute or defend the Department’s legal position.
- Verify contracts that need to be drafted and edited.
- Draft legal documents, advise on them, or mentor junior staff on drafting legal documents that clearly motivate or justify a specific position in a case. Determine if the contract is legally sound and reflects the Department’s intentions.
- Certify contracts and ensure consistency between instructions and contract content. Verify that signed contract contents match the certified version.
- Communicate with internal and external stakeholders on legal matters to ensure compliance.
