Role Clarification & Key Performance Areas FACULTY OF ARTS AND HUMANITIES Senior Lecturer / Lecturer: Department of Geography, Environmental Studies & Tourism The University of the Western Cape (UWC) enjoys national and international acclaim for its continuing contribution to democratic change in SouthAfrica and for making quality education accessible to all South Africans. We wish to appoint a Senior Lecturer / Lecturer in the Department of Geography, Environmental Studies & Tourism who will be highly motivated and willing to make a significant contribution to a dynamic and supportive Faculty dedicated to teaching and research, as well as to overall student development. The Department offers a three-year BA degree, with Geography & Environmental Studies, and/or Tourism as majors, a BA Honours degree in Geography & Environmental Studies, MA and PhD degrees. The successful candidate will have a strongly developed sense of collegiality and an ability to work as a member of a team. They will contribute to teaching, research and supervision in the Department’s existing Tourism major as well as contributing to teaching in the Geography and Environmental Studies major and at Honours level. The ideal candidate will have an interest as well as demonstrated background in tourism geographies, such as to enable the strengthening of this focus area in the Department. We are especially interested in applicants with theoretical interests and empirical research agendas in tourism from a geographical perspective. In their covering letter, candidates will be expected to identify their own teaching and research interests that speak to the current profile and future development of the department. Responsibilities will include: Contributing to the learning and teaching programme at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Willingness to learn and use new teaching technologies, and work in an online environment. Supervising postgraduate students (BA Honours research projects, MA and PhD theses in Geography and Environmental Studies). Developing their own research and publications profile. Contributing to departmental academic administration. Contributing to community engagement. Minimum Requirements Minimum Requirements (Senior Lecturer level): PhD degree in Geography with a focus on tourism, or a closely related field is required. Demonstrated experience commensurate with the level of Senior Lecturer in facilitating inspirational and transformative student learning experiences focusing on tourism from a geographical perspective. The ability to teach modules with a focus on tourism from a geographical perspective, in line with the Department profile and co-requisite modules. The demonstrated ability to supervise postgraduate students. A research record commensurate with what would be expected of a Senior Lecturer. Added advantage for the Senior Lecturer level would be: Expertise in human geography broadly defined; tourism, mobilities and/or migration studies; and/or intersections with environmental studies would be a strong recommendation. Minimum Requirements (Lecturer level): MA degree in Geography with a focus on tourism, or a closely related field. Demonstrated experience commensurate with the level of Lecturer in facilitating inspirational and transformative student learning experiences focusing on tourism from a geographical perspective. The ability to teach modules with a focus on tourism from a geographical perspective, in line with the Department profile and co-requisite modules. The ability to supervise Honours and MA students. A research record commensurate with what would be expected of a Lecturer. Added advantage for the Lecturer level would be: PhD degree (or near completion) in Geography with a focus on tourism, or a closely related field Expertise in human geography broadly defined; tourism, mobilities and/or migration studies; and/or intersections with environmental studies would be a strong recommendation.
