X2 Research Assistant

Requirements

  • Grade 12 Certificate. An advanced certificate in a related field is an advantage.
  • Good skills in reading, writing, and speaking English.
  • Valid firearm proficiency and competency certificate for a manually operated rifle.
  • Unit Standard 123519: Handle and use a manually operated rifle or carbine for business purposes.
  • Valid SAPS firearm competency certificate.
  • Knowledge and experience in veld firefighting.
  • Valid First Aid Certificate Level 1.
  • 2-5 years of experience as a game guard, research assistant, or field ranger in a Big Five game reserve is an advantage.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Basic computer skills are an advantage.
  • Skills in using GPS technology are an advantage.
  • Valid driver’s license is an advantage.

Responsibilities

  • Protect and guide researchers in the field from potential dangers, such as wild animals.
  • Take part in planned and test burns, as well as vegetation condition assessments.
  • Help maintain research infrastructure, sites, and equipment.
  • Collect, download, and record routine monitoring data as needed.
  • Keep the office, research camp, storeroom, and gardens tidy.
