Key Requirements:
- A Grade 12 Certificate
- A Traffic Officers Diploma
- Registration as a Traffic Officer with the Department of Transport
- A Code B/EB driver’s licence
- A Grade B driving licence Examiner will be an added advantage
- Peace Officer Certificate / valid SAPS clearance (SAPS69i) not older than 4 months
- Minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience
- Ability to communicate in both isiZulu and English
- Problem-solving skills, writing skills, computer knowledge, and knowledge of NRTA 93/96
- Be physically fit and able-bodied
- No criminal records or pending cases
Key Performance Areas:
- Law enforcement and enforcement of Municipal bylaws
- Coordinate activities related to controlling traffic flow and public safety
- Traffic controlling and escorting
- Perform point duties, process warrants of arrest, and handle other traffic-related duties
- Communicate with the control room and attend to traffic bottlenecks from accidents, breakdowns, or peak hour congestion
- Use hand signals to direct drivers and pedestrians, divert, stop, and control traffic flow
- Interact with the control room for specific services
- Patrol areas, communicate with offenders, and work with the South Africa Police Services control room to facilitate arrests for serious offences
- Participate in routine checks, stop vehicles, and inspect driver’s licences, vehicle registration, and roadworthiness
- Attend to road safety rule infringements, issue fines, warnings, and summons, and execute warrants of arrest
- Perform any other functions as directed by the Chief Traffic Officer and Supervisors
- Communicate with the control room via two-way radio and manage traffic during peak times, especially festive seasons
- Set up and operate speed timing devices, stop offenders, and provide evidence like electronic speed recordings before issuing fines or summons
- Handle documentation, notifications, serve summons, compliance orders, execute warrants of arrest, and prepare statements
- Attend courts and provide evidence for charges
- Monitor local areas and act on inappropriate or non-conforming situations or behavior
- Patrol streets and suburbs to identify non-conforming practices
- Respond to distress calls or crime reports, communicate with the control room, and perform policing tasks like crowd control and arrests
- Communicate with offenders and coordinate with SAPS, EMRS, or Fire services for serious offences
- Data capturing for all infringements
- Assist the pound master or rangers in impounding cattle on public roads
- Complete reports, statutory documentation, and registers
- Record statements from witnesses and offenders, and document traffic and other offences before issuing fines
- Update the occurrence book with incident details and complete procedural documents like vehicle log sheets, time sheets, statements, and inspection checklists
- Follow requirements of the Road Traffic Act 93/96
- Perform basic examiner duties and other traffic section tasks as required by supervisors
- Carry out any other lawful duties as instructed by superiors
