The City of Tshwane Metropolitan Police Department (TMPD) is committed to fostering a safer, more secure environment for all residents and visitors within the metropolitan area. Successful candidates will emerge as fully qualified Metro Police Officers, equipped to enforce municipal by‑laws, national road traffic regulations, and contribute to crime prevention initiatives across all regions of Tshwane.
Position Summary
Metro Police Trainees will undergo a comprehensive training curriculum designed to develop proficiency in traffic enforcement, by‑law policing, crime prevention techniques, and community engagement strategies. Trainees will receive a monthly stipend determined by the department and will be exposed to both theoretical instruction and practical, hands‑on experience at TMPD facilities and in the field.
Key Responsibilities

Attend and actively participate in all scheduled training modules, including classroom instruction, physical fitness evaluations, practical driving tests, and psychometric assessments

Master the enforcement of the National Road Traffic Act, 1996, as well as relevant municipal by‑laws governing public safety, traffic management, and community policing

Support crime prevention operations through patrol duties, community liaison activities, and collaboration with other law enforcement agencies

Demonstrate ethical conduct, professionalism, and respect for human rights at all times, serving as a visible and accountable representative of the City of Tshwane

Successfully complete all examinations, practical assessments, and fitness requirements to graduate into full Metro Police Officer status
Minimum Requirements

South African citizen, aged between 18 and 35 years, with proof of residence within the City of Tshwane metropolitan area

Grade 12 certificate or equivalent, with original or certified copies to be presented during the selection process

Valid driver’s licence for manual transmission vehicles, plus successful completion of the departmental practical driving test

No criminal record or pending criminal cases; willingness to undergo fingerprinting at own cost for vetting purposes

Not listed on any sexual or child offender registers, nor previously dismissed from government service for misconduct

Medically certified as fit for strenuous physical activity, and successful completion of a physical fitness evaluation

Proficiency in English, with a written and oral assessment during the selection process

No visible tattoos when wearing any uniform of the service; prospective applicants must be willing to adhere to TMPD grooming and dress standards

Willingness to undergo and pass a psychometric assessment and to sign and comply with the TMPD Code of Conduct

A genuine dedication to public service, strong teamwork orientation, and the physical endurance necessary for law enforcement duties are essential for success.
Training and Career Development
Trainees will complete an eighteen‑month programme comprising:

Mentored field deployments under the supervision of experienced Metro Police Officers
Upon successful completion, graduates will be appointed as Metro Police Officers within the TMPD and will have access to ongoing professional development opportunities, specialized courses, and career advancement pathways.
Remuneration
A monthly stipend, determined by departmental policy, will be paid to all trainees throughout the eighteen‑month programme. Details of the stipend structure will be communicated to shortlisted candidates.
