Job Summary

A vacancy exists for a Specialist Assistant: Boma in the Kimberley Veterinary Wildlife Services. This role supports the capture, care, and handling of wildlife in national parks. Duties include feeding animals, administrative tasks, transporting feed and animals, maintaining boma facilities, and operating vehicles like LDVs, trucks, tractors, and trailers. All work follows standard operating procedures and annual targets.

Requirements

  • Matric (Grade 12)
  • Code C1 driver’s licence with PDP
  • 1-4 years of experience in wildlife capture or care in holding facilities
  • Good communication skills (verbal and written)
  • Experience in project management or administration
  • First aid level 1 (advantageous)
  • Experience with chainsaw or brush cutter (advantageous)

Responsibilities

  • Provide timely fodder and water to wildlife in holding facilities based on nutritional needs
  • Maintain hygiene in facilities by removing and disposing of animal waste and spoiled feed
  • Monitor and report on wildlife welfare and feed stock issues
  • Harvest and collect natural forage for wildlife
  • Handle wildlife during sales, translocation, or research projects
  • Monitor storage of fodder deliveries from internal and external sources
  • Drive LDVs, trucks, tractors, and trailers as needed
  • Operate specialized equipment like truck-mounted cranes and overhead cranes
  • Perform other duties assigned by the supervisor, such as supporting inter-departmental operations like wildlife off-takes or technical tasks
  • Conduct maintenance at facilities, including clearing vegetation, fence repairs, applying herbicides, and fixing boma structures and capture equipment
  • Handle day-to-day administrative tasks
  • Follow Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) and veterinary standard operating procedures
