Senior Specialist: Big Data & Analytics

Position Purpose

  • Provide expert guidance in the design, development, and maintenance of Data Warehouse and Data Mart systems for Transnet Freight Rail (TFR).
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to identify opportunities for using data systems to improve business processes and strategic IT use.
  • Lead and direct the advancement of Data Warehousing, Big Data, and Analytics to support TFR’s business objectives.
  • Maintain system consistency and balance in data processing activities.

Position Outputs

  • Develop long-term strategic goals for BI development and conduct research on emerging technologies.
  • Select and evaluate database components and tools, lead BI software development, and deployment.
  • Direct projects for new Big Data & Analytics tools, lead integration efforts, and ensure optimal system performance.
  • Collaborate across departments to promote Big Data Science & Analytics, mentor team members, and contribute to complex projects.
  • Educate stakeholders on BI principles, train staff, and participate in training development.
  • Oversee junior specialists, ensuring alignment with business goals and providing leadership and mentorship.
  • Facilitate Dev-Ops principles to improve workflow, feedback, and continuous learning.

Qualifications & Experience

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Diploma in IT or Computer Science.
  • Certifications in Business Intelligence/Analytics, Big Data, or ITIL are advantageous.
  • 8+ years of experience in IT disciplines (e.g., Data Warehouse development, Business Intelligence, or Big Data Analytics), with at least 4 years in a managerial role.

Competencies Required:

  • Strong customer focus and ability to manage expectations.
  • Research skills to identify opportunities for emerging technologies.
  • Ability to choose efficient solutions for business needs.
  • Excellent communication skills to present technical information.
  • Strong analytical, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Ability to motivate teams and apply skills to solve problems.

Technical Knowledge:

  • Expert SQL knowledge and experience with relational databases.
  • Expertise in data architecture and database design.
  • Proficiency in BI tools like SAP BW, SAP BusinessObjects, and Microsoft Power BI.
  • Understanding of data warehousing concepts, ETL processes, and data validation.
  • Knowledge of data privacy laws (e.g., PoPIA) and governance processes (e.g., COBIT/ITIL).
