Senior Specialist 1: Data Coordination (Specimen Databases)

SANBI seeks a motivated and detail-oriented person to coordinate and manage specimen data and database activities in the Natural Science Collections Facility (NSCF). This role includes developing and using tools, standards, and workflows. It focuses on data migration, customization, digitization, and cleaning, especially with Specify software. You will also capture and share biodiversity data with aggregators and help build a strong network of NSCF partner institutions for better collaboration and data management.
This position requires a degree in Life Sciences, Information Sciences, or an equivalent qualification at NQF 7. An honours degree or postgraduate qualification at NQF 8 is an advantage. You need 6 years of relevant work experience (including time from postgraduate research).
Key skills include:
- Strong knowledge and experience with relational databases, data management, and Specify software.
- Expertise in collection management, curation, and project management.
- Skills in stakeholder engagement and relationship building.
- Understanding of laws, policies, and processes for program and project management.
- Excellent project management abilities.
- Ability to work in teams under pressure while focusing on quality, cost, and safety.
- Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Good communication (verbal and written) and interpersonal skills.
- Advanced computer skills, including MS Word, MS Project, PowerPoint, Excel, Internet, and Outlook.
You must have a valid driver’s license with at least one year of driving experience and be willing to travel.
Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and apply standards, protocols, and tools for specimen data management.
- Ensure specimen data quality.
- Handle data migration, database customization, and support.
- Engage with stakeholders and build relationships.
- Conduct research and develop your own skills.
