About the Role

The Grounds and Gardens department at Rhodes University is looking for a Refuse Collector to support the transport and collection of waste from kitchens, residences, and campus grounds. This is an entry‑level position suitable for candidates with a Grade 10 qualification or equivalent.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the collection and transport of refuse across the university campus.
  • Support the disposal of waste from kitchens, residences, and grounds.
  • Follow safety and environmental procedures at all times.

Requirements

  • Grade 10 or equivalent.
  • No prior experience required.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends if needed.

Selection Process

Short‑listing meeting: 24 February 2026 (date subject to change). Selected candidates will be invited to an assessment and interview. The University may appoint a fixed‑term contract of at least three years.

Remuneration

Basic Pensionable Salary: R138,587 per annum

Cost to Company: Approximately R212,398 per annum

Additional Information

Preference will be given to applicants residing within the Makana Municipality. The position is advertised as permanent, but the University reserves the right to appoint a fixed‑term contract. All appointments comply with the Employment Equity Act 55 of 1998, the Immigration Act 13 of 2022, and Rhodes University’s recruitment policies.
