Requirements:
- Grade 12 qualification.
- Basic R425/R683 qualification (diploma or degree in nursing) with a psychiatric nursing qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a professional nurse in general nursing.
- Knowledge of the Mental Health Care Act, Criminal Procedure Act, and Child Justice Act.
- Proof of current registration with SANC.
- Computer literacy and a driver’s license are advantages.
- Skills in presentation, leadership, problem-solving, stress tolerance, self-confidence, innovation, creativity, emotional intelligence, and project management.
Duties:
- Provide optimal, holistic nursing care that meets set standards and follows professional and legal guidelines.
- Deliver treatment and care to patients in the psychiatric unit in a cost-effective, efficient, and equitable way.
- Implement therapeutic nursing groups in the unit.
- Act as a shift leader, responsible for planning, organizing, coordinating, and supervising to ensure quality patient care standards are met.
- Prevent and manage patient safety incidents.
- Manage human resources during shifts, promote professionalism, and lead by example.
- Communicate effectively with patients, supervisors, and other clinicians, including writing reports when needed.
- Understand and apply nursing legislation, the National Nursing Strategy, and ethical practices. Ensure infection prevention and control (IP&C) standards are implemented.
- Conduct presentations, manage problems and patient safety incidents in the unit.
- Implement the National Nursing Strategy 2020/21-2025/26 and manage quality improvement plans.
- Supervise and mentor students and other nursing staff.
- Provide direction for implementing nursing care plans.
- Serve on hospital committees to help achieve hospital goals and act as Operational Manager when required.
