Job Description

Dis-Chem Pharmacies is looking for a qualified Post Basic Pharmacist Assistant for its Secunda store. In this role, you will help provide pharmaceutical care by managing patients’ medicine needs under the supervision of a pharmacist.

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 / Matric
  • Basic Pharmacist Assistant qualification
  • Registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC)
  • Experience working with Unisolv
  • Computer literate, including MS Office
  • Good numerical skills
  • Strong command of English and a second language
  • Willing to work retail hours

Advantageous Qualifications and Skills

  • Knowledge of retail or FMCG operations
  • A third additional language
  • Knowledge of or experience with SAP and E-Scripting
  • Understanding of drugs, family planning, and complementary medicine

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Help sell Schedule 1 and Schedule 2 medicines or scheduled substances
  • Assist in compounding, preparing, or manipulating non-sterile medicines following approved procedures
  • Support the manufacturing of non-sterile medicines as directed
  • Help with repackaging medicines
  • Manage the distribution and control of stock for Schedules 1 to 5
  • Assist in ordering medicines up to Schedule 6 as authorized
  • Read and prepare prescriptions, select and label medicines under pharmacist guidance
  • Interpret scripts accurately and act professionally within SAPC guidelines
  • Enter script details correctly and verify patient information
  • Pick, pack, label, and check medications, noting common dosages and drug interactions
  • Give clear instructions to patients on medicine use
  • Stay updated on medical aid procedures for claims and dispensing
  • Ensure all medications are verified and signed by a pharmacist
  • Advise and help patients at the dispensary, self-medication area, and front shop
  • Follow up on script tracking and patient appointments as needed
  • Explain medical aid costs to patients
  • Provide health promotion information to individuals
  • Handle paperwork for accurate medical aid claims
  • Correct errors on rejected scripts
  • Secure authorization for chronic, HIV/AIDS, and oncology medications
  • Maintain and update customer profiles on the system
  • Merge profiles as required and notify relevant teams
  • Address any notes or messages on customer profiles
  • Report low stock, out-of-stock items, or errors to the dispensary manager
  • Receive and merchandise stock following Dis-Chem’s procedures and FEFO (First Expired, First Out)
  • Support bi-annual stock takes
  • Control stock, cash, and assets
