Job Description

Dis-Chem Pharmacies is looking for a reliable Post Basic Qualified Pharmacist Assistant for the Riverside Mall store. In this role, you will provide pharmaceutical care by addressing patients’ medicine needs and ensuring their proper management.

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 / Matric
  • Basic Pharmacist Assistant qualification
  • Registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC)

Advantageous Qualifications and Experience

  • Knowledge of retail or FMCG operations
  • Experience working with Unisolv
  • Oncology experience
  • Third additional language
  • Knowledge of or experience in SAP and E-Scripting
  • Knowledge of drugs, family planning, and complementary medicines

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Help sell Schedule 1 and Schedule 2 medicines or scheduled substances.
  • Assist in compounding, preparing, or manipulating non-sterile medicines or scheduled substances using approved formulas and standard procedures under a responsible pharmacist.
  • Support the manufacturing of non-sterile medicines or scheduled substances according to approved processes.
  • Help with repackaging medicines.
  • Manage the distribution and control of stock for Schedule 1 to Schedule 5 medicines or scheduled substances.
  • Assist in ordering medicines and scheduled substances up to Schedule 6, as instructed by authorized persons under the Medicines Act.
  • Read and prepare prescriptions, select or compound medicines, label and supply them in suitable containers after a pharmacist reviews and evaluates the prescription.
  • Interpret scripts accurately and act professionally within legal limits set by the SAPC.
  • Enter script details correctly and confirm patient information on the system.
  • Pick, pack, label, and check medications accurately, knowing common dosages and key drug interactions.
  • Give clear instructions to patients on how to use their medicines properly.
  • Stay updated on medical aid procedures for claims and dispensing.
  • Ensure all medications are checked and signed off by a pharmacist.
  • Advise and support patients at the dispensary, self-medication area, and front shop.
  • Follow up on script tracking reports and appointments as requested by the dispensary manager.
  • Explain medical aid costs to patients.
  • Provide health promotion information to individuals.
  • Handle paperwork for submitting accurate claims to medical aids.
  • Fix errors on scripts rejected by medical aids.
  • Secure authorization for chronic, HIV and AIDS, and oncology medications.
  • Maintain customer profiles on the system.
  • Merge profiles locally and notify UCS to merge them centrally.
  • Check and act on any messages in customer profiles.
  • Report low stock, out-of-stock items, and stock errors to the dispensary manager.
  • Receive dispensary stock following Dis-Chem’s standard operating procedures and store it using the first-expiry-first-out (FEFO) method.
  • Assist with bi-annual stock takes.
  • Manage stock, cash, and assets effectively.
