Job Description

Dis-Chem Pharmacies is looking for a qualified Post Basic Pharmacist Assistant for its Knysna store. In this role, you will help provide pharmaceutical care by managing patients’ medicine needs and ensuring these needs are met responsibly.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Grade 12 / Matric
  • Basic Pharmacist Assistant qualification
  • Registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC)
  • Experience working with Unisolv
  • Computer literate, including MS Office
  • Good numerical skills
  • Strong command of English and a second language
  • Willing to work retail hours

Advantageous:

  • Knowledge of retail or FMCG operations
  • A third additional language
  • Knowledge of or experience with SAP and E-Scripting
  • Understanding of drugs, family planning, and complementary medicine

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Help sell Schedule 1 and Schedule 2 medicines or scheduled substances.
  • Assist in compounding, preparing, or manipulating non-sterile medicines or substances using approved formulas and procedures under a pharmacist’s guidance.
  • Support the manufacturing of non-sterile medicines or substances following approved standards.
  • Help with repackaging medicines.
  • Manage the distribution and control of stock for Schedule 1 to Schedule 5 medicines or substances.
  • Assist in ordering medicines and scheduled substances up to Schedule 6 as instructed by authorized persons.
  • Read and prepare prescriptions, select, measure, or mix medicines, label, and dispense them in suitable containers after a pharmacist reviews the prescription.
  • Interpret scripts accurately and act professionally within legal and SAPC guidelines.
  • Enter script details correctly and verify patient information on the system.
  • Ensure accurate picking, packing, labeling, and checking of medication, knowing common dosages and key drug interactions.
  • Give clear instructions to patients on how to use their medicines.
  • Stay updated on medical aid procedures for claims and dispensing.
  • Make sure all medications are checked and signed by a pharmacist.
  • Advise and help patients at the dispensary, self-medication area, and front shop.
  • Follow up on script tracking reports as requested by the dispensary manager and remind patients about appointments.
  • Explain medical aid costs to patients.
  • Share health information to promote well-being.
  • Handle paperwork for submitting claims to medical aids accurately.
  • Fix errors on scripts rejected by medical aids.
  • Secure authorization for chronic, HIV and AIDS, and oncology medications.
  • Update and maintain customer profiles on the system.
  • Merge profiles locally and notify UCS for central merging.
  • Check for any notes on customer profiles and take appropriate action.
  • Report low or out-of-stock levels and stock issues to the dispensary manager.
  • Receive dispensary stock following Dis-Chem’s procedures and arrange it using FEFO (First Expired, First Out).
  • Assist with bi-annual stock counts.
  • Control stock, cash, and assets.
