- Hold a qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in Forensic Pathology.
- Be registered with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Forensic Pathology.
- For Grade 1: No experience required after HPCSA registration as a Medical Specialist in Forensic Pathology.
- For Grade 2: At least 5 years of relevant experience as a Medical Specialist after HPCSA registration (or equivalent for foreign-qualified professionals) in Forensic Pathology.
- For Grade 3: At least 10 years of relevant experience as a Medical Specialist after HPCSA registration (or equivalent for foreign-qualified professionals) in Forensic Pathology.
- Understand how a Forensic Pathology Department works. Have experience with post-mortems, autopsy work, and dissection. Possess good interpersonal skills for effective service in team settings at all levels. Be able to conduct research. Have the ability to teach and train medical students, Forensic Pathology Officers, and medical staff.
- Know the laws, policies, and code of conduct for Forensic Pathology Practice in South Africa. Be creative and open to new ideas. Communicate clearly and discreetly, both verbally and in writing. Be computer literate in Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel.
- No payment is required to apply for this position. If you do not meet the registration requirements, you may still apply. You will be considered for appointment only if you provide proof of your application for HPCSA registration and proof of payment of fees on or before the interview date.
- This applies only to health professionals registering for the first time in a specific category with the relevant council, including those changing registration status. You may need to undergo profiling assessments before appointment.
- The applications will be kept for vacancies in the Forensic Pathology Service, Division of Forensic Medicine, Stellenbosch University, for three months from the advert date, as long as the job title and core functions match.
- Provide full-time medico-legal death investigation services in the Division of Forensic Medicine by performing and supervising post-mortems for natural and unnatural deaths. Compile and complete reports, including supporting investigations, and edit reports from junior staff.
- Give expert testimony in court and provide opinions on inquest dockets or related cases as requested by the Department of Justice.
- Handle academic teaching and training, research, clinical governance, and quality assurance. Support the Head of the Clinical Unit with administrative tasks for the Division.
- Hold a valid Code E/EB Driver’s License. Be prepared to deliver expert testimony in court.
- Perform routine service autopsies. Work outside normal hours and away from your base when needed. Be available to travel to regional facilities for short periods.
- Salary: Grade 1: R 1 341 855 per annum; Grade 2: R 1 531 032 per annum; Grade 3: R 1 773 222 per annum. Part of the package can be structured based on your personal needs.
