Requirements

  • Qualifications that allow registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in Surgery (by 2025).
  • A valid work permit for non-South Africans.
  • Good understanding of medical ethics.
  • Experience in multidisciplinary management, teamwork, and the relevant medical field.
  • Knowledge of current health and public service rules and policies.
  • Skills in patient consultations, history taking, examinations, clinical assessments, and management.
  • Grade 1: No experience required after HPCSA registration as a Medical Specialist (Independent Practice). For foreign-qualified applicants, at least 1 year of relevant experience after registration with a recognized foreign council or HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Surgery.
  • Grade 2: At least 5 years of experience after HPCSA registration as a Medical Specialist (Independent Practice). For foreign-qualified applicants, at least 6 years of relevant experience after registration with a recognized foreign council or HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Surgery.
  • Grade 3: At least 10 years of experience after HPCSA registration as a Medical Specialist (Independent Practice). For foreign-qualified applicants, at least 11 years of relevant experience after registration with a recognized foreign council or HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Surgery.
  • Knowledge, skills, training, and competencies in the field.
  • Strong knowledge of medical ethics.
  • Experience in multidisciplinary management and teamwork. Solid clinical knowledge and skills in general clinical areas. Ability to work independently, under pressure, beyond normal hours, and with diverse teams. Good communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills. Knowledge of current health policies, laws, programs, and priorities. Ability to teach and guide junior staff.

Duties

  • Supervise and manage surgery services and coordination.
  • Perform duties effectively to support the institution’s goals and maintain high standards of patient care.
  • Take responsibility for managing patients in a level 2/3 service facility.
  • Help prepare and implement guidelines and protocols.
  • Take part in academic and training programs, clinical audits, and ongoing professional development. Support hospital management to ensure efficient patient care and services.
  • Follow the performance management system, including quarterly reviews and final assessments.
