Grade 1: R1 341 855 – R1 422 810 per annum

Requirements

  • Appropriate qualifications that allow registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in Ophthalmology (2025).
  • A valid work permit for non-South Africans.
  • Sound knowledge of medical ethics.
  • Experience in multidisciplinary management, teamwork, and the relevant medical discipline.
  • Knowledge of current health and public service regulations and policies.
  • Skills in consultations, history taking, examination, clinical assessment, and management.
  • Grade 1: None after registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist (Independent Practice). Minimum of 1 year relevant experience after registration with a recognized foreign professions council or the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist (Ophthalmology) for foreign-qualified employees.
  • Grade 2: Minimum of 5 years’ experience after registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist (Independent Practice). Minimum of 6 years’ relevant experience after registration with a recognized foreign health profession council or the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist (Ophthalmology) for foreign-qualified employees.
  • Grade 3: Minimum of 10 years’ experience after registration with the HPCSA as Medical Specialist (Independent Practice). Minimum of 11 years’ relevant experience after registration with a recognized foreign health profession council or the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist (Ophthalmology) for foreign-qualified employees.
  • Sound knowledge of medical ethics, multidisciplinary management, teamwork, and experience in the discipline.
  • Strong clinical knowledge and skills in general clinical areas.
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure, including beyond normal hours, and with diverse teams. Good communication, leadership, interpersonal skills, and engagement when needed.
  • Knowledge of current health policies, legislation, programs, and priorities. Ability to teach and guide junior staff.

Duties

  • Supervise and manage Ophthalmology services and coordinate them.
  • Perform duties proficiently to support the institution’s aims and maintain high standards of patient care.
  • Take responsibility for managing patients in a level 2/3 service facility.
  • Help prepare and implement guidelines and protocols.
  • Participate in academic and training programs.
  • Assist with clinical audits and engage in continuous professional development.
  • Support hospital management to ensure efficient patient care and services.
  • Comply with the Performance Management and Development System (including quarterly reviews and final assessments).
