Salary:
Grade 1: R1 341 855 – R1 422 810 per annum
Grade 2: R1 531 032 – R1 623 609 per annum
Grade 3: R1 773 222 – R2 212 680 per annum

Requirements:

  • Appropriate qualifications that allow registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as a Medical Specialist in Internal Medicine (2025).
  • A valid work permit is required for non-South Africans.
  • Sound knowledge of medical ethics, multidisciplinary management, teamwork, and experience in internal medicine.
  • Knowledge of current health and public service regulations and policies. Skills in consultations, history taking, examination, clinical assessment, and management.
  • Grade 1: None after HPCSA registration as Medical Specialist (Independent Practice). Minimum of 1 year relevant experience after registration with a recognized foreign professions council or HPCSA for foreign-qualified employees.
  • Grade 2: Minimum of 5 years’ experience after HPCSA registration as Medical Specialist (Independent Practice). Minimum of 6 years’ relevant experience after registration with a recognized foreign health profession council or HPCSA for foreign-qualified employees.
  • Grade 3: Minimum of 10 years’ experience after HPCSA registration as Medical Specialist (Independent Practice). Minimum of 11 years’ relevant experience after registration with a recognized foreign health profession council or HPCSA for foreign-qualified employees.
  • Knowledge, skills, training, and competencies required.
  • Sound knowledge of medical ethics, multidisciplinary management, teamwork, and experience in the discipline. Strong clinical knowledge.
  • Competency in general clinical domains. Ability to work independently and under pressure, beyond normal hours, and with diverse teams. Good communication, leadership, interpersonal skills, and engagement when needed. Knowledge of current health policies, legislation, programs, and priorities.
  • Ability to teach and guide junior staff. Behavioral attributes: Stress tolerance, teamwork, self-confidence, and building good relationships.

Duties:

  • Supervise and manage Internal Medicine services and coordinate activities. Perform duties proficiently to support the institution’s aims and maintain high standards of patient care.
  • Take responsibility for managing patients in a level 2/3 service facility.
  • Help prepare and implement guidelines and protocols. Participate in academic and training programs.
  • Assist with clinical audits and actively engage in continuous professional development. Support hospital management to maintain efficient patient care and services. Comply with the Performance Management and Development System (quarterly reviews and final assessments).
