Job Description

The purpose of this role is to ensure the safe operation of the engine room and its equipment. This includes monitoring systems during watchkeeping, performing planned maintenance, handling repairs, and maintaining operational standards to optimize vessel performance.

Key Responsibilities

• Monitor engine temperature, pressure, and other critical systems during watchkeeping.
• Start up plant and machinery, monitoring warm-up processes.
• Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks and address breakdowns promptly.
• Record engine hours and maintain an updated logbook.
• Train subordinate staff and manage spare parts inventory.
• Ensure safety equipment is well-maintained and functional.
• Assist with fuel transfer and ballast operations.

Qualifications and Experience

• Grade 12 or N4 qualification with an apprenticeship or cadetship (minimum 30 months).
• Certificate of Competency as Engineer Officer issued under the Merchant Shipping Act.
• Minimum 12 months of sea time experience.
• At least 6 to 12 months’ experience as a Marine Engineer Officer (MEO).

Skills and Competencies

• Ability to interpret technical drawings and engineering manuals.
• Strong problem-solving skills for practical technical issues.
• Good negotiation, communication, and interpersonal skills.
• Analytical and problem-solving abilities.
• Basic computer literacy.
• Familiarity with company policies and safety standards.

Work Environment

<p<Student Lives on board the vessel for 12/24-hour shifts over a 14-day period.
