Qualifications

• Grade 12 certificate
• Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT)
• Medical Test NFPA 1582
• Must be between 18 and 35 years old

Requirements

• Code C1 driving licence
• Proficiency in at least two official languages of the Western Cape (Afrikaans, English, or isiXhosa – speak, read, and write)
• Must pass a department physical test upon entry and annually
• Must pass a medical test before placement, after offer, and as baseline
• No mental phobias such as claustrophobia (confined spaces), acrophobia (heights), bathophobia (depths), aquaphobia (water), hemophobia (blood), achluophobia (darkness), autophobia (isolation), or necrophobia (corpses)
• Physically and mentally fit
• Willing to work shifts and overtime as needed
• Able to work at any fire station, fire service facility, or section within the jurisdiction as assigned by the Chief Fire Officer
• No criminal record

Job Purpose

Under supervision, perform tasks related to firefighting, emergency rescue, basic medical care, fire prevention, training, operating and maintaining fire equipment, and keeping fire station facilities in good condition. This role protects lives and property in line with the Fire Brigade Services Act (Act 99 of 1987).

Key Performance Areas

• After completing training and minimum qualifications, carry out firefighting and emergency operations under the guidance of seniors and officers to reduce risks to life and property in the community.
• Prepare for emergency incidents and protection duties under supervision to educate the public, maintain safety standards, and ensure operational efficiency. This helps reduce fire incidents and creates a safer environment for firefighters and residents.
• Prepare equipment and vehicles under supervision to ensure they are safe, ready, and working properly for emergencies. Maintain a safe and clean working environment.
• Handle basic administrative tasks under supervision to keep relevant records up to date.
• Participate in the Municipality’s Performance Management and Development System.
