About the job:
- The CSIR offers an Internship opportunity in the Biomanufacturing Technology Demonstration Research Group. This Internship aims to help graduates gain practical work experience in research and development of recombinant proteins for industrial use. You will work under the guidance of researchers and engineers in the Biomanufacturing Impact Area teams. The position is based in Pretoria.
Key responsibilities:
Under supervision, the Intern will:
- Assist in expression optimization studies of recombinant proteins using host systems like E. coli and plant-based platforms.
- Support downstream protein extraction and purification to improve yields and purity.
- Perform protein analysis using techniques such as SDS-PAGE and Western blotting.
- Prepare buffers, culture media, and other reagents for experiments.
- Maintain accurate and detailed laboratory records.
- Analyze and interpret experimental results.
- Compile technical reports and other project documents.
- Contribute to planning and executing experiments.
- Help develop and implement standard operating procedures.
- Assist with laboratory inventory management.
- Take responsibility for the laboratory as custodian.
Qualifications, skills, and experience:
- A Master’s degree in biotechnology, biochemistry, microbiology, or a related field.
- Computer literacy in MS Office.
- Knowledge of molecular biology, biochemistry, and bioanalytical techniques.
- A hands-on approach to learning new techniques, operating equipment, and working in the lab.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Self-motivated and a team player.
- Analytical, methodical, innovative, and results-driven.
- Willing to learn and work under pressure.
- Proactive and focused.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to prioritize tasks with a good sense of urgency and accuracy.
- All international qualifications need an evaluation report or certificate from the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).
