Requirements and Expectations

Minimum Requirements

  • ABET Certificate (higher qualifications are an advantage).
  • No experience is required, but 2 or more years in manual work or grounds maintenance is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of gardening tools and equipment, including how to care for lawns, prune, and trim.
  • Understanding of how to use chemicals safely, such as mixing and applying fertilizers, herbicides, and insecticides.
  • Basic knowledge of how to maintain equipment for best use.
  • Familiarity with water use and support tasks for resources.
  • Understanding of health and safety rules, plus garden maintenance practices.
  • Basic knowledge of government rules on environment or safety.
  • Good communication skills and ability to work in a team.
  • Ability to work near rivers, dams, canals, and in tight spaces.
  • Willing to help other teams and schemes when needed.
  • Must be on time, productive, and reliable.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Keep grounds, gardens, and outdoor areas clean and well-maintained.
  • Fix tools and small structures like fences, benches, and buildings using hand and power tools.
  • Mix and apply fertilizers, herbicides, and insecticides with sprayers.
  • Take care of lawns, plants, and trees by raking, mulching, trimming, and watering.
  • Clean sidewalks, driveways, parking lots, fountains, and other outdoor spaces.
  • Do basic maintenance on gardening equipment and report big problems to service providers.
  • Keep records of maintenance and inspections, including job cards and equipment logs.
  • Do regular checks and report issues like cracks, erosion, or standing water.
  • Follow all safety and environmental standards.

  • Preference may be given to candidates living in KwaZulu-Natal Province.
