Job Description

The Dis-Chem Longships Mall store in Plettenberg Bay is seeking a Frontshop Assistant. In this role, you will maintain high merchandising standards and provide excellent customer service at the point of sale, following Dis-Chem’s policies and procedures.

Minimum Requirements (Essential):

  • Grade 12 / Matric or Senior Certificate
  • 0–6 months of retail work experience

Advantageous:

  • 1 year of work experience in retail
  • Certification in Retail Business Management

Key Responsibilities:

  • Ensure shelves are fully stocked with products at all times and presented neatly.
  • Check stock to avoid sell-by date issues.
  • Restock merchandise as needed to boost sales.
  • Handle out-of-stock customer queries promptly using the customer service list.
  • Store and pack delivered stock correctly.
  • Verify merchandise displays, labels, and pricing; report any discrepancies to management.
  • Keep the storeroom organized and tidy.
  • Stay updated on new products to assist customers effectively.
  • Help with restocking merchandise and supplies to maximize sales.
  • Assist with back shopping when required.
  • Handle all merchandise carefully to prevent losses.
  • Process customer purchases, including cash, cards, vouchers, coupons, and other payments.
  • Exchange merchandise or accept returns when authorized by the Frontshop Leader.
  • Process loyalty cards, including those from partner programs.
  • Follow procedures for placing cash in the drop safe.
  • Ensure all voids and price changes are approved and signed by a Frontshop Leader or Retail Store Assistant.
  • Maintain accurate cash flow at all times.
  • Rotate stock regularly and follow Dis-Chem stock control procedures.
  • Report low stock, out-of-stock items, damaged stock, and expired stock to management.
  • Assist with stock counts and general stocktaking.
  • Identify and report damaged or expired stock immediately to management.
  • Help with loading and off-loading stock when needed.
  • Flatten boxes after unpacking and place them in the designated area.
  • Build professional relationships with customers; offer friendly, helpful, and courteous assistance.
  • Report customer compliments and complaints to management.
  • Meet the company benchmark for customer turnover per hour.
  • Assist in training new and existing team members.
  • Ensure outgoing stock, items, or scripts are scanned and paid for.
  • Keep daily takings (cash, cheques, vouchers, card slips, voids, and incomplete dockets) in the till until placed in the drop safe.
  • Report any bad or suspicious behavior from staff or customers to management.
  • Maintain housekeeping to Dis-Chem standards.
  • Follow all Dis-Chem policies and standard operating procedures.
  • Adhere to health and safety rules and regulations.
  • Comply with the Dis-Chem uniform and personal appearance policy.

Competencies (Essential):

  • Knowledge of retail operations and administration.
  • Ability to find solutions to issues and know when to escalate them appropriately.
  • Basic math skills, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Clear verbal communication of ideas and facts.
  • Respond to customer questions promptly.
  • Follow procedures and recognize their importance.
  • Take responsibility for work quality and timeliness with minimal supervision.

Advantageous:

  • Basic computer skills (Word, Excel, Outlook), numerical skills, and SAP experience.

Special Conditions of Employment:

  • Ability to work retail hours.
  • South African citizen.
  • Clear MIE, no criminal record, and clean credit rating.
  • Valid driver’s license and own reliable transport.
