Rand Water

Rand Water, previously known as the Rand Water Board, is a South African water utility. It supplies clean drinking water to Gauteng province and other parts of the country. As the largest water utility in Africa, it draws water from various sources, purifies it, and provides it to industries, mining companies, and local municipalities. The company also supports sanitation efforts.

Minimum Requirements

  • Applicants must have a matric certificate and have completed the two years of theoretical training needed for a National Diploma in Biotechnology, Microbiology, Environmental Sciences, or Analytical Chemistry.
  • Applicants must be South African citizens with a valid SA ID document.
  • Applicants must be under 35 years old, as per the NSDS guidelines.
  • Applicants must not have taken part in previous experiential learning programs. They must need this experience to complete their National Diploma in one of the mentioned fields.
  • Applications must include the following documents (incomplete applications will not be considered):
    • An application letter and curriculum vitae.
    • A recommendation letter from the tertiary training institute confirming that only one year of workplace training is needed.
    • Certified copies of the ID document.
    • Certified copies of the training record, including the academic transcript.

Primary Duties

  • Apply basic principles of ISO 17025.
  • Collect samples for water quality monitoring.
  • Prepare media, chemicals, reagents, and samples for the work area.
  • Perform analytical tests on received samples.
  • Document and check results in the relevant databases.
  • Conduct and record quality control checks for identified tests.
  • Maintain equipment, instruments, biological cultures, and test kits, and document the maintenance.
  • Follow safety, health, and environmental (SHE) practices and keep the work area clean.

Knowledge

  • Strong theoretical knowledge of Biotechnology, Microbiology, Environmental Science, or Analytical Chemistry.

Skills

  • Good writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Computer skills in word processing and spreadsheets.
  • Ability to prioritize, organize, and plan work.

Attitude

  • A self-motivated person who focuses on quality and output, and can handle pressure and routine tasks.
  • Ability to interact with staff and customers.
  • A team player who can also work independently.
  • Conscientious with attention to detail.
  • Willing to work after hours, weekends, and public holidays.
