National Heritage Council of South Africa
The National Heritage Council (NHC) is seeking a dynamic and experienced leader to oversee and enhance the Core Business operations within our organization. This strategic role involves directing business development initiatives and ensuring effective monitoring of business plans across various functional units. The selected candidate will play a pivotal role in managing the Core Business Value Chain, which encompasses critical areas such as Living Heritage and Tourism Development, the Resistance and Liberation Heritage Route, and Funding and Research and Knowledge Production.
Key Responsibilities
The successful applicant will be entrusted with a range of strategic and operational responsibilities, including:
- Strategic Direction and Oversight: Providing leadership and direction to ensure alignment with the NHC’s overarching goals.
- Business Development and Monitoring: Developing and implementing business plans that drive growth and efficiency within the Core Business functional units.
- Operational Management: Overseeing the daily operations of the Core Business Value Chain, ensuring optimal performance and service delivery.
- Stakeholder and Partnership Management: Cultivating relationships with key stakeholders to enhance collaboration and support for heritage initiatives.
- Governance and Risk Management: Ensuring compliance with governance frameworks while effectively managing risks associated with operations.
- Resource Planning: Planning, monitoring, and managing resources to support the successful execution of projects and initiatives.
- Continuous Improvement: Leading efforts to optimize unit performance and drive improvements in service delivery.
- Acting CEO Contributions: Stepping in as Acting CEO when delegated, contributing to the overall management of the NHC.
Required Skills and Qualifications

- Strategic Management Expertise: Proven ability to devise and implement strategic plans.
- Operational Planning Skills: Strong operational management capabilities to oversee day-to-day activities effectively.
- Analytical Abilities: Competence in problem analysis and developing innovative solutions.
- Research Proficiency: Skills in compiling research projects and articles to support organizational goals.
- Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to compile strategic documents and policies effectively.
- Leadership and People Management: Experience in leading teams and managing staff to foster a productive work environment.
- Networking Acumen: Ability to build and maintain relationships with stakeholders in the heritage sector.
- Core Heritage Knowledge: Familiarity with heritage conservation principles and practices.
- Project Management and Budgeting Skills: Experience in managing projects and budgets while mitigating risks.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
To qualify for this position, candidates must have:
- A Postgraduate Degree at the Master’s level in heritage, conservation, strategic management, or a related field (NQF Level 9).
- An Honours Degree in South African history, political science, anthropology, or related fields (NQF Level 8) is desirable.
- 4-6 years of proven experience in strategic-level management.
- A minimum of 5 years in Heritage Resource Management, Environmental Management, public policy development, or related areas.
- 4-6 years of experience heading a public organization or unit (desirable).
