Requirements:
- A qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a Nursing Assistant (Enrolled Nursing Assistant). One year of psychiatric experience is an added advantage.
- Good communication skills, empathy, compassion, time management, medical knowledge, and organizational skills. Knowledge of Batho Pele principles and how to apply them.
- Understanding of the six key ministerial priorities and National Core Standards. Successful candidates will undergo medical surveillance.
Duties:
- Observe patients for signs of physical or emotional distress and report concerns to the supervising nurse. Provide basic care such as bathing, shaving, grooming, and dressing patients.
- Watch for and report changes in patient behavior or body language that may indicate distress or danger to self or others. Escort patients to appointments in the hospital or other areas as needed. Record vital statistics like weight, height, blood pressure, pulse rate, and temperature.
- Communicate with physicians or other health care professionals about the patient’s progress or setbacks. Observe patients to identify problems that may need psychiatric intervention.
- Provide support and guidance to patients during therapy sessions. Work with other members of the psychiatric nursing team to deliver comprehensive care. Attend in-service training and staff meetings as required. Follow all facility policies and procedures.
