Enrolled Nurse

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 / NQF Level 4
  • Certificate in Enrolled Nursing (equivalent to Higher National Certificate / NQF Level 5)
  • Current registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as an Enrolled Nurse under Regulations R2175
  • 2 years’ experience after enrollment as an Enrolled Nurse with SANC
  • 1 year or more experience in a similar Primary Health Care (PHC) environment

Primary Function

Provide caring, scientific, safe, and high-quality nursing care to individuals, families, and communities. Follow legal and ethical guidelines. Work independently within your scope of practice to offer preventive, promotive, curative, and developmental health care. Refer cases outside your scope. Stay professional, promote health, and prevent illness.

Key Performance Areas

  • Assess, diagnose, and deliver preventive, curative, promotive, rehabilitative, and referral health services within your scope of practice. Cover areas like communicable and non-communicable diseases, childhood illnesses, and uncomplicated prenatal and postnatal care.
  • Support professional staff and clinicians in treating communicable and non-communicable diseases.
  • Follow Gauteng Health Management Information System (GHMIS) policies.
  • Help deliver awareness and education programs on healthy living to the community.
  • Handle administrative tasks for updating clinical records and registers.
  • Provide customer-focused services internally and externally.

Core Competencies

  • Knowledge of the City’s health processes, best practices, policies, and procedures
  • Basic math skills for drug dosage calculations
  • Basic knowledge of human anatomy and physiology for wound management, suturing, suture removal, and applying/removing plaster of Paris (POP)
  • Basic applied pharmacology and microbiology for drug administration, infection control, and understanding disease causes and prevention
