Requirements

  • Higher Certificate in Emergency Medical Care is essential
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Health Care Providers serves as an advantage
  • 1-year operational experience as an Emergency Care Assistant
  • A valid driver’s license and valid Professional Driving Permit (PrDP) (required for operations shifts; not needed for events only)

  • Knowledge and application of HPCSA guidelines and scope of practice

Key Outputs

  • The Emergency Care Assistant (ECA) will practice as clinical assistants within the emergency medical care and rescue environment. This replaces the Basic Ambulance Assistant Course as the entry qualification into emergency medical services. This is an entry-level position that recognizes the key competencies required of ECAs working under the guidance of Emergency Care Technicians, Emergency Care Practitioners, and Medical Officers in various contexts. In general, the ECA provides supportive services within the pre-hospital setting.
  • Ensures operational readiness for emergency calls
  • Administers patient care in line with the ECA scope of practice
  • Reports near misses, slips, and adverse events
