Key Performance Areas

  • Transport learners in special schools to and from school by following designated routes and schedules. Obey all traffic laws.
  • Communicate effectively with learners, parents, and school staff.
  • Help learners with safe loading and offloading. Report any incidents to school personnel and parents to follow proper procedures.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections on the vehicle.
  • Supervise learners during transit to ensure their safety and follow departmental policies.
  • Conduct daily safety and operational inspections of the assigned vehicle. Report any needed mechanical repairs.
  • Carry out periodic safety drills as required by law and complete necessary reports.
  • Handle deliveries and collections.
  • Collect and deliver documents, correspondence, mail, packages, and other items from places like the post office, other departments, and external stakeholders.
  • Purchase, load, and transport equipment, groceries, and other supplies for the institution.
  • Provide health support by taking learners to clinics or hospitals.
  • Plan and follow the most efficient routes using maps or GPS to ensure timely arrivals and avoid traffic delays.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections, ensure the vehicle is fueled, clean, and well-maintained. Report issues and arrange repairs as needed.
  • Keep accurate records, including logbooks for trips, mileage, fuel use, and goods handled.
  • Assist with general office and clerical tasks, such as filing, photocopying, running errands, and helping with loading or unloading items.
  • Interact with clients and customers in a professional and courteous way. This may include collecting payments or obtaining signatures for deliveries.

Prerequisites

  • Grade 12 certificate.
  • Valid Code 10 driver’s license with a Professional Driving Permit (PDP).
  • Three years of bus driving experience (an added advantage).
  • A driver’s competency test will be conducted before appointment.
