Western Cape Blood Service

The Western Cape Blood Service was established in October 1938. It began with the first meeting of the Cape Peninsula Blood Transfusion Service at Groote Schuur Hospital. In the early days, it had a slow start, with only 200 donors in the first three months and about 30 transfusions per month. In the 1930s, transfusion practices were basic.

Purpose of the Job

To keep the blood donor clinic running smoothly by:

  • Helping carry clinic equipment to and from venues.
  • Assisting with setting up the clinic.
  • Interacting with donors.
  • Preparing donors for donation.
  • Monitoring donors during the donation.
  • Stopping the bleeding process.
  • Handling any adverse reactions.
  • Transporting staff and equipment safely to and from clinics.

Requirements

Minimum Requirements

  • Matric Certificate.
  • A Code EB or C driver’s licence without endorsements and a valid PrDP, with 3 years of driving experience.
  • Willingness to relocate to the George area.
  • Computer skills (a related course is an advantage).
  • Working hours are variable, including shifts, some weekends, and call-outs.
  • First Aid qualification (advantageous).

Required Skills, Knowledge, and Attributes:

  • Good spoken English, well-groomed, with strong communication skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills and ability to interact with the public.
  • Accuracy in collecting data and attention to detail.
  • Friendly attitude and willingness to go the extra mile.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Previous experience in a customer service environment.
