South African Department of Correctional Services

The Department of Correctional Services is a department of the South African government. It manages the country’s prison system. The department has around 34,000 staff members and oversees 240 prisons that house about 189,748 inmates.

Requirements:

  • An undergraduate qualification (NQF level 7) recognized by SAQA in Social Science or equivalent. Five (5) years of experience at middle management or senior managerial level in a similar environment. A certificate for entry into the Senior Management Services (SMS) from the National School of Government (NSG) is required and must be submitted before appointment. Computer literacy. Valid driver’s licence.

Required Knowledge:

  • Understanding of the Justice Cluster dynamics. Knowledge of public service policies and laws, including the Public Service Act and Regulations, Public Finance Management Act (PFMA), and the Correctional Services Act 111 of 1998 as amended. Experience in public service planning processes. Knowledge of collective bargaining and human resource management for efficiency. In-depth understanding of human resources laws and regulations.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide guidance and leadership to achieve the division’s strategic goals. Help set the component’s strategy to align with business plans. Link individual performance to business objectives in the balance scorecard. Develop, implement, and report on strategic frameworks. Consolidate strategic reports. Develop and implement policies, directives, acts, and regulations. Lead and coordinate workflow in the Commissioner’s office. Create effective administrative systems and procedures. Maintain good relations with the department and stakeholders. Manage human resources, finances, assets, and performance information.
