The South African Weather Service (SAWS) operates as a Section 3(a) public entity under the Ministry of Environmental Affairs, governed by a Board. Officially recognized as a public entity on July 15, 2001, under the South African Weather Service Act (No. 8 of 2001), as amended in 2013, SAWS is a prominent authority in weather and climate forecasting in South Africa.

Requirements:

  • A National Diploma or Degree in Electronic Engineering, Computer Science Engineering, IT, or a relevant comparable qualification, with a minimum of three years of post-qualification experience.
  • Proven competency in electronic maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs, along with demonstrated fault-finding capabilities.
  • Experience with V-Sat Satellite Systems, IT network management using LINUX servers and routers, HF and VHF 2-way radio equipment, PABX and VOIP telephone systems, PCs, fire detection systems, GPS, and general electronic equipment repair is highly preferred.
  • Familiarity with using diagnostic tools such as oscilloscopes and spectrum analyzers, and adherence to good workshop practices and health and safety policies is essential.
  • The candidate must be capable of working independently with minimal support, even under extreme pressure and without supervision.
  • Strong computer literacy, along with excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work effectively within a team.

Key Duties:

  • Oversee the operation, maintenance, fault-finding, and repairs of all communication services and equipment at the Marion Base, including satellite, radio, IT, GPS, alarm, and telephone systems.
  • Operate cargo handling equipment as necessary.
  • Report directly to the team leader and collaborate as part of the technical team, led by the technical team leader, while performing additional base-related technical functions as required.
  • Prepare monthly and annual reports, conduct stock-takes to order spare parts and equipment, and carry out other common non-technical duties assigned to expedition members.
