Key Performance Areas:
The CEO will oversee the planning, development, and execution of the Gauteng Tourism Authority’s (GTA) destination marketing and management strategies. They will also lead the overall management and leadership of GTA. The main responsibilities include:
- Promoting Gauteng as a destination through effective marketing, using market research, product marketing, data analytics, business intelligence, communications, advertising, and public relations.
- Building and promoting a strong, attractive image of GTA and Gauteng Province by developing strategies for domestic tourism. This will help position Gauteng as a vibrant and profitable part of the tourism industry and as a leading global tourism destination.
- Leading the use of artificial intelligence and technology to improve GTA’s internal processes and tourism data management. This will support efficient, data-driven decisions and better connections across the tourism value chain.
- Driving collaboration between tourism supply and demand functions and the industry at national, provincial, and local levels. This includes implementing strategic priorities like GGT 2030, the Gauteng Tourism Sector Strategy, the National Tourism Sector Strategy, the Gauteng Tourism Sector Recovery Plan, and other business strategies.
- Outlining short-, medium-, and long-term plans to meet GTA’s strategic goals. Identifying key challenges and creating risk mitigation plans.
- Ensuring strong corporate governance and compliance, including internal controls and risk-based compliance management.
- Designing strategies to secure optimal funding for GTA. Analyzing and proposing capital and operational financial needs. Managing resources effectively according to the Public Finance Management Act and agreements with the Gauteng Provincial Government.
- Providing assurance to the Office of the MEC for Economic Development (Executive Authority) and the Board (Accounting Authority) about GTA’s financial health.
- Attracting, developing, and retaining talented management staff. Supporting the senior management team and fostering GTA’s culture and values.
- Managing stakeholders effectively and positioning GTA as a thought leader in tourism.
- Partnering to build a capable state by driving economic growth, job creation through infrastructure, and skills training.
- Leading efforts in sustainable and responsible tourism by setting directions, encouraging stakeholder collaboration, and promoting sustainable practices.
- Showing a clear understanding of the future of work in a destination marketing organization, focusing on diversity, equality, inclusion, digital transformation, and artificial intelligence.
Minimum Requirements:
This senior role requires a highly skilled person with at least an Honours degree (preferably a Master’s) in business leadership, tourism, or a related field. Applicants need at least 10 years of strategic management experience, including at least 6 years at senior management level and 4 years at executive level (preferably as CEO).
Qualifications will be evaluated with experience in tourism development, business leadership, destination marketing, financial management, corporate governance, and positioning businesses in local and international markets. Candidates should have strong experience in strategic management and leadership in a medium-sized destination marketing organization in the tourism or hospitality industry.
