The Department of Water and Sanitation is the custodian of South Africa’s water resources. It is primarily responsible for the formulation and implementation of policy governing this sector.

Requirements

  • An appropriate trade test certificate in Carpentry or Plumbing.
  • Ten (10) years of post-qualification experience as an artisan or artisan foreman.
  • A valid driver’s licence.
  • Supervisory, planning, and analytical skills.
  • Project management and technical report writing skills.
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and maintenance management systems.
  • Knowledge of PMDS and PFMA.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Computer literacy (Word and Excel).
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong technical analysis and problem-solving abilities.
  • Sound project planning, organizing, and execution capabilities.
  • Willingness to travel and work long hours, including under pressure.

Duties

  • Maintain and advance expertise in the maintenance of houses, offices, pump stations, and buildings.
  • Interpret civil drawings and set out works according to specifications.
  • Perform all finishing work on the interior and exterior of buildings.
  • Repair, construct, and install wooden and metal structures and fixtures for residential and commercial buildings.
  • Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and PFMA.
  • Manage technical services and contribute to the updating of technical manuals, standard drawings, and procedures to incorporate new technologies.
  • Ensure quality assurance in line with specifications.
  • Manage administrative and related functions, including providing input into the budgeting process and compiling reports as required.
  • Exercise financial management by monitoring and controlling expenditure according to budget to ensure efficient cash flow management.
  • Manage and supervise artisans and related personnel to ensure effective people management.
  • Oversee leave management and performance monitoring of subordinates.
  • Manage the development, motivation, and utilization of human resources to ensure a competent workforce and the continued success of technical services.
  • Take corrective actions to address performance deviations and achieve departmental objectives.
  • Note: Candidates may be required to complete a practical and theoretical test.
