Chief Accountant Position at Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality

Located in the Eastern Cape where Madiba spent his formative years, our municipality serves as a gateway through the Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport.

Position Overview:

Job Type: Full-Time
Experience Required: 8+ years
Location: Eastern Cape
Field: Finance & Accounting

Essential Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree/National Diploma in Accounting/Finance (major in financial accounting)
• Proven experience in municipal financial management systems and processes
• Advanced knowledge of MFMA, Municipal Systems Act, and National Treasury regulations
• Proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) at intermediate level
• Valid EB driver’s license
• Supervisory experience preferred

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead municipal budget preparation and compliance with MFMA regulations
• Manage financial reporting deadlines and intergovernmental communications
• Analyze financial performance across operational and capital budgets
• Develop long-term financial strategies and policy frameworks
• Oversee financial data accuracy and meaningful reporting
• Coordinate with National/Provincial Treasury on compliance matters
• Supervise accounting team of Senior Accountants and Accountants
• Conduct financial ratio analysis and strategic recommendations
