SAPS is now seeking qualified individuals to join its team as a Motor Vehicle Mechanic (Automotive Motor Mechanic – Petrol) at the Vryburg Garage in North West.

Generic Requirements:

  • Competency: Applicants must demonstrate the necessary skills for the post.
  • Citizenship: Must be a South African citizen.
  • Language Proficiency: Fluency in at least two official languages, one of which must be English.
  • Driver’s License: Must hold a valid light motor vehicle driver’s license.
  • Clean Record: No prior criminal or departmental convictions, and no pending cases.
  • Appearance: No visible tattoos when in uniform.
  • Vetting Process: All applicants will undergo a thorough vetting process, including security screening and fingerprint verification.

Additional Post Requirements:

  • Trade Certificate: A valid Trade Test Certificate relevant to this post, as per the Skills Development Amendment Act 37/2008.
  • Experience: Previous experience in the relevant field is considered an advantage.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Vehicle Repairs & Maintenance: Perform efficient, high-quality repairs and routine maintenance on SAPS vehicles.
  • Safety Compliance: Maintain a clean, safe working environment in line with the Occupational Health & Safety Act (Act 83 of 1995).
  • Diagnosis & Stripping: Accurately diagnose issues, strip down vehicles, and determine necessary parts for service and repairs.
  • Documentation: Complete parts request forms and job cards detailing work done and time taken for each vehicle.
  • Equipment Security: Ensure the safekeeping of all tools and equipment used.
  • Mentorship: Supervise and mentor apprentices during their training.

Selection Process:

  • Verification: Short-listed candidates will be required to produce original documents during the selection process. All qualifications and licenses will be subjected to verification with the relevant institutions.
  • Practical Assessment & Interview: Short-listed applicants may undergo a personal interview and practical assessment.
  • Vetting: All candidates will be vetted under the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act and the Children’s Act. Individuals listed on the National Register for Sex Offenders or Child Protection Register will be disqualified.
  • Fingerprint Screening: Short-listed candidates will also undergo fingerprint screening as part of the vetting process.

  • Response Time: Only successful candidates will be contacted. If you have not been contacted within three months of the closing date, consider your application unsuccessful.
  • Medical Assessment: Successful applicants appointed under the Police Service Act will undergo a medical assessment and may need to complete a lateral entry program at a SAPS Academy.
  • Firearm Competency: SAPS members must maintain competency in the use of firearms throughout their service.
