The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS), reporting to the Department of Higher Education and Training, plays a pivotal role in supporting South African citizens pursuing higher education. NSFAS provides academic bursaries to students attending 26 public universities and 50 TVET colleges across the country. As part of their commitment to fostering a supportive and healthy workplace, NSFAS is looking for an Employee Wellbeing Specialist to design, implement, and drive employee wellness initiatives.
Position Overview:
The Employee Wellbeing Specialist will develop and implement a comprehensive wellness strategy and Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) aligned with NSFAS’s overall Human Resources and organisational strategy. This role focuses on fostering a healthy and productive workforce through wellness initiatives, policy development, and strategic employee support.
Key Responsibilities:
Policy Implementation:
- Mature and socialise employee wellbeing policies, procedures, and processes across the organisation.
- Develop presentations and deliver awareness programs to embed wellbeing policies within the company culture.
Strategic and Operational Objectives:
- Contribute to the Human Resources Management value proposition by analysing wellness trends and implementing best practices.
- Design and drive NSFAS’s wellness programmes, including professional counselling, awareness campaigns, training, and support through external vendors.
- Serve as the employee trustee for provident fund management and participate in health care committees and wellness coaching.
Wellness Programme Management:
- Plan and coordinate wellness initiatives aligned with employee needs.
- Conduct trauma debriefing and offer support during crisis situations.
- Monitor wellness programme effectiveness, generate reports on trends, and provide monthly and quarterly statistics.
Stakeholder and Relationship Management:
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to drive wellness programmes.
- Manage service level agreements (SLAs) with external wellness providers and ensure compliance with corporate standards.
People Management:
- Lead and mentor employees involved in delivering wellness programmes.
- Guide teams in managing their performance and achieving wellness objectives.
Project Management:
- Supervise wellness-related projects, monitor budgets, and ensure effective execution.
- Analyse project reports to assess ROI and inform decision-making processes.
Compliance and Risk Management:
- Support compliance with the Employment Equity Act, Labour Laws, and other applicable legislation.
- Identify and mitigate risks related to employee wellbeing interventions and monitor compliance.
Reporting:
- Provide regular reports on wellness initiatives and strategic recruitment KPIs.
- Evaluate internal and external risks related to recruitment and wellbeing operations.
Desired Skills and Experience:
Minimum Qualifications:
- NQF 7 Degree in Industrial Psychology, Psychology, or Social Work.
- Certification as an EAP or wellness practitioner.
- 6–8 years of experience in Employee Assistance Programme/Wellness, with at least 3 years in managing an EAP/Wellness function.
- Experience in a higher education environment is advantageous.
- Understanding of labour laws (e.g., LRA, EEA, BCEA, OHSA) and experience with employee health and wellness practices.
- Solid project management skills.
- Knowledge of the higher education sector and employee wellbeing legislation.
Preferred Qualifications:
- NQF 8 Degree in Industrial Psychology, Psychology, or Social Work.
- Registered with HPCSA as a Counsellor, Social Worker, Psychologist, or Industrial Psychologist.
- Certified Wellness Coach with advanced project management skills.
- Extensive experience with employee wellbeing functions in a higher education setting.
- Knowledge of the NSFAS Act and PFMA is highly desirable.
