Job Description

RCL FOODS is looking for a Boiler House Fitter Artisan to join our Siqalo Foods Division. This role is based in Boksburg and reports to the Site Services Lead.

The main goal of this role is to provide engineering and operations skills for general maintenance. This must follow set guidelines. Duties include installing, maintaining, repairing machinery, equipment, and fixtures. All work must meet relevant codes of practice and standards.

Minimum Requirements

  • Completed N3 and relevant Mechanical Trade Test
  • At least 5 years of experience
  • Experience with boilers, pumps, and conveyors is an advantage
  • Driver’s licence is essential
  • Willing to do required stand-by duty
  • Answer all call-outs promptly and efficiently
  • Willing to work outside normal hours
  • Welding training is an advantage

Duties & Responsibilities

Leadership

  • Work well in a team with boiler operators and artisans.
  • Manage daily activities and outputs on your own.
  • Understand machine drawings to improve performance and reduce downtime.
  • Follow scheduled tasks and execute them as needed for the plant.
  • Promote company values, beliefs, and team morale.
  • Support artisans and operators in their tasks.
  • Manage needed parts and work with the Engineering Planner on planned tasks.
  • Inspect work for completion and compliance with rules, SHEQ, and maintenance procedures.
  • Decide on materials, equipment, and supplies. Ensure they are ordered and ready, with help from the Maintenance Planner and Superintendent.
  • Use maintenance schedules to plan daily activities.
  • Give input on project feasibility by reviewing proposed solutions.
  • Contribute to annual factory shutdown planning.
  • Join problem-solving efforts. Handle machine issues quickly and find solutions.
  • Use Root Cause Analysis tools to complete work orders.

Repairs and Maintenance

  • Maintain mechanical equipment and machinery efficiently and cost-effectively. Use hand tools and power tools to assemble, install, test, inspect, and maintain.
  • Spot potential faults early by inspecting systems, equipment, and components for hazards and defects.
  • Diagnose problems to boost production. Lead repairs with your team.
  • Suggest ways for continuous improvement.
  • Take part in World Class Manufacturing (WCM) activities.
  • Keep service levels high by doing breakdown, preventative, and predictive maintenance well.
  • Reduce breakdowns by analysing them, meeting PPM needs, and making improvements.
  • Join strategic plans for maintenance and breakdown reductions (RCM).
  • Identify major engineering losses and investigate using Kaizen methods like Fishbone or 5 Why.
  • Help create, coach, and develop engineering skills in others using OPL and SOPs.
  • Report unfinished job cards to the Engineering Superintendent and Maintenance Planner.
  • Use test equipment and tools to find and fix breakdown causes.

Storage and Maintenance of Tools

  • Keep power tools, hand tools, and equipment in good condition and stored safely.
  • Report broken tools or equipment to the Engineering Superintendent and Maintenance Planner.
  • Do duties to avoid downtime or safety issues.
  • Keep all tools safe, in good condition, and update the tool register.

General Assistance to Facilities Staff

  • Manage and maintain your own toolbox.
  • Keep the workshop and stores tidy.
  • Clean the area after maintenance.
  • Help with ad-hoc projects and tasks.
  • Follow 5S housekeeping principles in the department, including equipment and surroundings.
  • Remove unused items from the operating area and store them properly.

Safety, Health, Environment, Risk, and Quality (SHEQ)

  • Do risk assessments in your area.
  • Maintain a secure and safe working environment.
  • Ensure work documentation is used correctly.
  • Follow standard operating procedures, safe maintenance rules, company policies, HACCP, and safety, health, and environmental guidelines.
  • Carry out reasonable and lawful work instructions.

Effective Teamwork and Self-Management

  • Take ownership of tasks. Plan, prioritise, and develop yourself.
  • Meet quality and productivity standards consistently.
  • Inform others if tasks or deadlines are missed, explain risks, and suggest solutions.
