Job Purpose

To conduct advanced audits to promote compliance by raising accurate assessments in line with relevant legislation.

Education and Experience

Minimum Qualification & Experience Required:

  • National Diploma / Advanced Certificate (NQF 6) in Accounting, Auditing, or Taxation, and 4 years’ experience in a tax audit environment.

Job Outputs

Process

  • Gather information and prepare reports with recommendations in your area of expertise.
  • Analyze data and evidence, review risks, and identify additional risks related to the audited entity, across tax types and related entities.
  • Review information at the dispute stage and handle taxpayer complaints.
  • Examine transactions across multiple tax types, entities, or groups to understand their tax implications.
  • Apply knowledge of methods, systems, and procedures to spot trends and risks.
  • Conduct research to find tax risks not covered by audits or other actions, and refer them to Case Selection for new audit areas.
  • Communicate interpretations and judgments on work outputs and queries in your specialty.
  • Perform advanced audits (plan, execute, finalize) following relevant laws, regulations, policies, and procedures using SARS systems.
  • Apply policies, standards, procedures, and legislation correctly in your work.
  • Plan and schedule your activities to improve quality and service delivery.
  • Work with Debt Management during and after audits to optimize collection of liabilities. Provide financial analysis for recommendations.
  • Assist Client Service in resolving taxpayer issues that need direct auditor intervention.
  • Engage with Litigation and Dispute Management on legal interpretations, including court testimony if needed.
  • Handle process changes, implement them, and provide guidelines on new requirements.
  • Suggest improvements to policies and procedures, and contribute to drafts.
  • Identify serious tax offences for criminal investigations and provide detailed analysis.
  • Request additional information from taxpayers or practitioners to address audit risks.
  • Spot new risks for expanding audit scope or referring to Case Selection.
  • Manage audit progress using approved systems and keep notes updated.
  • Use SARS systems and external sources to assess risks and compliance.
  • Prepare and share reports and communications with stakeholders, ensuring coordination across audits.
  • Provide inputs for committees like Technical, Understatement, or Appeals Committees.
  • Investigate ways to optimize operations, processes, products, and risks.
  • Raise accurate assessments on SARS systems per relevant legislation.
  • Assist Account Maintenance with penalty and interest remission requests.
  • Use judgment to make decisions based on practical knowledge.
  • Employ digital tools to tackle advanced audit risks, including eCommerce.
  • Work with Electronic Forensic Services for large data downloads, specifying needs and risks.
