To conduct advanced audits aimed at promoting compliance by raising accurate assessments in line with relevant legislation.
Education and Experience
Minimum Qualification and Experience Required
- National Diploma / Advanced Certificate (NQF 6) in Accounting, Auditing, or Taxation, plus 4 years’ experience in a tax audit environment.
Job Outputs
Process
- Gather information and prepare reports with recommendations in your area of expertise.
- Analyze data and evidence to confirm identified risks and consider additional risks related to the audited entity, across tax types and related entities.
- Review information during disputes and handle taxpayer complaints.
- Examine transactions across multiple tax types, entities, or groups to understand their tax implications.
- Apply practical knowledge to identify trends and potential risks using relevant methods and systems.
- Conduct research to spot tax risks not addressed by audits or other interventions, and refer them to Case Selection for new audit focus areas.
- Communicate interpretations and judgments on work outputs and queries in your specialization.
- Perform advanced audits (planning, execution, and finalization) following relevant laws, regulations, policies, and standard procedures using SARS systems.
- Apply policies, practices, standards, procedures, and legislation correctly in your work.
- Plan and schedule your activities to improve quality and service delivery continuously.
- Work with Debt Management during and after audits to optimize collection of liabilities, including financial analysis for recommendations and engagement with the taxpayer at finalization.
- Collaborate with Client Service to resolve escalated taxpayer issues requiring direct auditor intervention.
- Engage with Litigation and Dispute Management on legislative interpretations, considering similar cases and court outcomes; you may need to testify in court.
- Implement process changes, provide guidelines, and support new requirements.
- Recommend enhancements to policies and procedures, and contribute to drafting new ones.
- Identify serious tax offences for criminal investigations, providing detailed analysis and legislation; you may testify in criminal court.
- Request additional information from taxpayers or practitioners to address audit risks.
- Spot new risks for audit expansion or referral to Case Selection.
- Manage audit progress using approved systems, keep notes on progress and outcomes.
- Access and use information from SARS systems and external sources to assess risks and compliance.
- Prepare and share communications or reports with stakeholders, ensuring alignment across related audits.
- Provide inputs for committees based on analysis, and present cases to ensure consistent treatment.
- Investigate opportunities to optimize operations, processes, products, and risks.
- Raise accurate assessments on SARS systems per relevant legislation.
- Assist Account Maintenance with penalty and interest remission requests.
- Use knowledge and judgment to make decisions.
- Leverage digital tools and systems to handle advanced audit risks, including eCommerce.
- Work with Electronic Forensic Services for large data downloads, specifying requirements and risks.
