A global horticultural seed company is seeking an Assistant Plant Breeder to help the Head of Breeding develop and create new hybrid tomatoes for specific market segments.

Minimum Requirements

  • Relevant Honours Degree in Plant Breeding or a similar field
  • At least 2 years’ experience in breeding
  • Good organization and time management skills
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Willingness to work on diverse tasks in various environments
  • Willingness to work in field and greenhouse conditions

Responsibilities

  • Support the breeder and farm teams with tasks like seed picking and sowing, generating germination reports, transplanting, maintaining plants, pollinating, harvesting, extracting seeds, disinfecting seeds, drying seeds, packaging, and updating inventory in the breeding database.
  • Assist the breeder in planning, designing, implementing, and executing breeding programs; evaluate and help with the selection process to ensure efficient and timely results.
  • Coordinate and communicate breeding program activities with the breeder, farm team, pathology and molecular teams, and research management.
  • Handle sampling for MAS and provide pathology support.
  • Help the breeder plan, organize, and supervise crossing blocks.
  • Manage accurate and detailed breeding program data using Phenome, including entering data, managing inventory, interpreting information, and reporting.
  • Coordinate, follow up, collect data, interpret results, and report on various on- and off-site trials.
  • Manage seed shipments and keep records.
  • Implement and follow phytosanitary requirements and perform seed health testing.
